Module 3
Chapter 16

Urgent Message

The first time you do the research it MUST be done in a law library using print media except for the assignments relating to the United States Code.*  That is the requirement for Chapter 16.  In chapter 17 you will be asked to do the research a second time using the internet.

Nolo Bene (Note Well)

* The United States Code only available online from the Truxal Library.  If you want to do the assignment in print media you will need to go the the Maryland Court of Appeals Library (Maryland Law Library). That is a real treat but not required! I will give 10 extra credit points for this assignment if it is done in print media and you copy the page that has the 50 Titles of the USC.

Print Media Research

There are a number of places where the work may be done.  The times of operation vary but most are open in the evening and on weekends.  I am hyper linking some of them so that you may check the hours of operation and directions.  If you are not local please email me so that I can give you some guidance in finding a location to do your research. I strongly suggest that you use the Truxal Library at Anne Arundel Community College or the Maryland State Law Library. The staff at both locations are very helpful.  They will not find the information for you but if you have a copy of the assignment with you they will provide guidance. We also so have the Lynn Wood Resource Center (law library) in FLRS210.  It is open when there are faculty around so you cannot count on it being open all of the time.  As paralegals you will often be faced with assignments that will require you to go to new places (Maryland District or Circuit Court, Federal District Court, Orphans Court, Land Records. Department of Assessments and Taxation, etc) to accomplish your mission. In the process you will meet new people and you will need guidance from them.  So pick yourself up and dust yourself off and go out there!

Online Research

The online research can be accomplished from any computer with internet access using the websites that I have hyper linked. If you want to do most of the research in one location and become knowledgeable about the databases used by most law firms, you  may use Westlaw or Lexis.  I strongly suggest that you use one of these sources. The password for Lexis changes regularly so I will not put it on the website.  I will email it to you in WebCT.

To access Lexis/Nexis click here.

Westlaw can be accessed from any computer on the Arnold, Glen Burnie, or Arundel Mills campuses by going through the Truxall Library Website.
