Chapter 1 focuses on the various definitions of a paralegal, professional organizations, the type of work a paralegal may perform and most importantly the skills and abilities needed to become a successful paralegal.  Paralegal students will not learn this material in subsequent classes.

First Assignment
  • Set up your Paralegal Reference Manual.

  • You need not send me anything related to the manual at this time.

  • I will be collecting it at the end of the semester.

Second Assignment
  • Create an imaginary law firm, including letterhead paper, that you will work for throughout the semester.

  • All correspondence (unless otherwise noted) will be created with you as the paralegal.

  • You will also need to create a supervising attorney and imaginary clients, as needed.

  • When writing a letter use the reference line (RE:) to indicate the subject and the assignment you are completing.

  • Sign your name as Legal Assistant where appropriate.

  • If it is appropriate to sign the attorney's name instead of the Legal Assistant, place your name in the cc: line along with other appropriate names to be copied.

  • Send a copy of the letterhead to Professor Mallick upon completion of Module 1. Follow the work delivery instructions on the syllabus.

Third Assignment

In addition to the information found in your text, you must use the Internet to locate the material and include Web addresses in the Professional Contact Information Sheet.
