Competency #3
Analyze the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases
Learning Objectives d & e
- d. Define pressure
- e. Describe atmospheric pressure at the particle level
Question
Write down your answer to the following question:
A banana sits in a sealed chamber at room temperature (77 °F; 25 °C) and atmospheric pressure (14.7 lb/in2 = 101,325 Pa = 101,325 N/m2). One cubic centimeter of air in this chamber contains 2.46 x 1019 air molecules. Elroy and Mira want to vary the pressure felt by the banana.
- Elroy suggests pumping some of the air molecules out of the container, while keeping the temperature the same
- Mira proposes to increase the temperature in the sealed container
For each suggestion, determine whether the pressure will increase, decrease, or remain the same. Justify each choice with a description of pressure on a molecular level.
