Competency #5
Analyze atomic structure in terms of the Bohr model
Learning Objective d
- d. Describe how the average atomic mass (found on the periodic table for each element) is calculated
Question
Write down your answer to the following question:
There are two naturally occurring isotopes of chlorine (Cl): chlorine-35 and chlorine-37.
Look at the average atomic mass of chlorine on the periodic table to help you decide which of the following would best describe the relative abundances of these isotopes.
- There must be approximately 50% of each isotope
- There must be approximately 25% chlorine-35 and 75% chlorine-37
- There must be approximately 75% chlorine-35 and 25% chlorine-37
- You cannot figure this out with the given information
