In old spaghetti westerns, villains were frequently seen holding their ears to train tracks to find out if the train was coming. Did this really work?

  1. Not really, by the time you could hear the train coming in the rails you could hear it coming through the air.
  2. No, sound can't travel through train tracks.
  3. Yes, the sound travels faster through the train tracks than through the air.
  4. Of course not, it was just a theatrical trick to let the audience know a train was coming.
