Potential energy is stored energy. Kinetic energy is energy of motion.
Chemical energy is stored inside coal, oil, and natural gas (these are all known as fossil fuels). When these fuels are burned, the energy is converted into thermal energy.
Solar energy (which is one type of electromagnetic energy) can be used to make electricity, heat water for your home, and even heats up your car when you leave it in the parking lot on a sunny day.
Two additional types of renewable energy are wind and hydroelectric, which take advantage of natural processes.
Nuclear energy is the energy found in radioactive isotopes.
