Competency #2
Answer and Explanation
One essential part of a kitchen is food! Food contains chemical energy - that is, energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold atoms and molecules together. The amount of energy in food is even listed on most packages, in units of Calories!
Another important aspect of a kitchen is the ability to heat food. Your oven, range, and toaster all provide thermal energy. The thermal energy often comes from electrical energy, but sometimes comes directly from chemical energy stored in the form of natural gas or propane.
Also, if you want to see what you are doing, you need light energy (which is really just a subset of electromagnetic radiation). The source of the light energy in your kitchen might be the sun, electrical energy, or an oil lamp (chemical energy).
