Call Numbers title

A call number is the unique number assigned to an item in a library.  The call number is found on the white label that appears on the edge of the item, such as the spine of a book.

You have probably encountered call numbers in prior visits to public libraries.  Public libraries typically use Dewey decimal call numbers - this just means that the call numbers begin with numbers.

Call numbers in academic libraries usually follow the Library of Congress classification system - for you, this means that the call numbers in Truxal Library will start with letters instead of numbers.

Books are arranged on the shelf in call number order.  Each call number in Truxal Library will start with a one or two letter combination - these letters quickly identify the subject area for the item.  What this means is that books are also arranged by subject matter, with similar subjects grouped together.

Check out an alphabetic subject area by call number outline to see what we're talking about.  Feel free to print a copy for your own use.
