Types of Reference Materials title

Reference books can be general in nature or they can be specialized (subject specific). There are many different types of reference books:

Dictionaries, such as the Oxford English Dictionary
definitions or meaning of key words associated with your topic
Encyclopedias, such as World Book Encyclopedia, or the The Holocaust Encyclopedia
overview and general information about a topic
Biographical Sources, such as the Dictionary of American Biography
details and information about the lives of individuals
Almanacs, such as the Maryland Business Almanac
facts and statistical type information
Statistical Sources, such as the Statistical Abstract of the United States
numbers and statistics
Chronologies, such as the Timetables of History
dates and timelines for topics and events
Atlases, such as the Times Atlas of the World
topographic and geographic information for topics
Handbooks, such as the Maryland Manual or Occupational Outlook Handbook
collections of useful information about a field, discipline, or topic
Directories, such as Directory of Community Services or Official Museum Directory
address and phone number information
Compilations, such as Contemporary Literary Criticism
 collections of documents or excerpts from texts
